BLIK breaks new records - number of Black Friday transactions reached above 5 million

Over the 4 days covering the two marketing events - Black Friday and Cyber Monday - users made nearly 15 million transactions worth over PLN 2 billion with BLIK. The most significant part was online shopping - 11 million transactions, worth PLN 1.6 billion. Most transactions were made on Black Friday, 25 November 2022.

During this year's Black Friday, a record was set for BLIK transactions made on a single day. There were nearly 4.3 million of them, and including P2P transactions, as many as 5.3 million. This was the best day in BLIK's history.

BLIK Friday and Cyber Monday Online

On 25 November 2022, there were 3.1 million online purchases made by the users, for a total of PLN 497 million (in the previous year it was 2.5 million transactions for PLN 404 million). The shopping on the two following days was also intense – 2.3 million transactions were recorded on Saturday, and as many as 2.8 million on Sunday. On Cyber Monday there were almost 2.9 million of them.

Every year we see the popularity of "black" sales increasing. One factor contributing to this trend is undoubtedly the macroeconomic situation and the Poles’ need to seek savings and favourable deals. Within 4 days, BLIK users spent nearly PLN 400 million more than last year, and Black Friday alone was a record-breaking day in terms of the number of transactions. Cyber Monday was also very popular with e-buyers this year. The number of online operations that day increased by 0.6 million compared to 2021. Undoubtedly, attractive prices encourage many people to make purchases

- says Monika Król, vice president of the board of the Polski Standard Płatności [Polish Payment Standard], the operator of BLIK mobile payments.

The power of the FIFA World Cup in betting and video gaming

An analysis of BLIK's transaction data shows that during these 4 days we observed a considerable variation in the online shopping categories when compared to the previous year. Between 25 and 28 November, BLIK user activity on betting sites increased the most, by as much as 87%. While this is not a category directly associated with Black Week, it shows the enormous power of the ongoing World Cup and the football match played by the Polish national team.

We could see the biggest transaction traffic on marketplace platforms. This is the largest category in Polish e-commerce. Many merchants offered a wide selection of products that users could purchase at very attractive discounts. In the analysed period, the marketplace grew by as much as 16% compared to last year.

On this year's Black Friday, BLIK users were equally eager to pay for video games. Year-on-year, the number of transactions in this category increased by nearly 29%, and the average shopping cart reached PLN 51.76.

Fashion and household goods stores were also very popular with online shoppers this year. Within four days, Poles made 22% more transactions on such sites when compared to the previous year. Interestingly, the average shopping cart value on clothing and accessory platforms was PLN 241.29, which is 7% more than in 2021. In the case of household goods, it was PLN 423.20

- concludes Magdalena Kubisa, Business Development Director at BLIK.

Traditional commerce with the highest year-on-year growth

Over the four days from Friday to Monday, users were also eager to use BLIK to pay at brick-and-mortar stores. Nearly 2.7 million transactions were recorded at the time, while in the previous year it was 1.3 million. The value of purchases was PLN 156 million compared to 77 million in 2021. The steadily growing interest in contactless payments had a significant impact on the results achieved in this channel.

The number of people who are willing to use BLIK on a daily basis also grows constantly from quarter to quarter. At the end of September, it was actively used by 12 million people. The total value of transactions completed in the first three quarters of 2022 exceeded PLN 98 billion.

BLIK is a common mobile payment standard. Currently, virtually every client of domestic payment institutions offering mobile apps has the option of using BLIK in such an app. The company Polski Standard Płatności (PSP) is responsible for the development of the system. PSP constantly develops BLIK capabilities to make the system as functional as possible for its users. The shareholders of the PSP are Alior Bank, Bank Millennium, Santander Bank Polska, ING Bank Śląski, mBank, PKO Bank Polski and Mastercard.
