Between July and September 2024, BLIK users conducted 625.5 million transactions worth EUR 20.6 billion (PLN 89.4 bn). By the end of the third quarter, 17.4 million people were actively using the solution. During the analyzed period, the largest increase in transactions was observed in the POS channel, with Poles using the service over 164 million times. Nearly half of these transactions were made through BLIK contactless payments.
Further growth across all channels
In the third quarter of 2024, which included the two holiday months, BLIK users completed 625.5 million transactions, a 38% increase compared to the same period last year. The total value of these transactions reached EUR 20.6 billion (PLN 89.4 bn), reflecting a 42% growth year-on-year. Between July and September 2024, Poles used BLIK an average of 7 million times per day. On the best day of the quarter, 9.8 million transactions were recorded, with the average value of EUR 35 (PLN 151).
Since the beginning of this year, BLIK users have completed over 1.7 billion transactions, nearly matching the total number achieved throughout last year. These figures vividly illustrate the scale our system has reached and the growing trust in the services we offer. In the coming quarters, we plan to introduce new features that will bring even greater benefits to our users. We are also intensifying our collaboration with partners to fully harness the potential of the Polish market. Our three-year strategy aims to double our business, not only in terms of transaction numbers. We want to continue accelerating and delivering value to our users at every stage of the purchasing process
– says Monika Król, Vice President of Polski Standard Płatności, the operator of BLIK.
BLIK's dominance in e-Commerce
In the quarter under review, the largest number of BLIK transactions were conducted in e-commerce, accounting for 46.2% of all operations. Between July and September this year, BLIK users made over 289 million online payments, a 27% increase compared to the same period last year. The total value of transactions in this channel reached EUR 9.8 billion (PLN 42.9 bn), up from EUR 7.1 billion (PLN 31.2 bn) a year earlier. The average amount of a single online purchase was EUR 34 (PLN 148).
During the third quarter of this year, BLIK users were actively shopping in various e-commerce categories. Notably, financial services experienced a 70% increase in transaction value, with an average basket size of EUR 61 (PLN 265). Fashion, consistently on of the most popular categories, saw a 30% growth in transactions, with an average basket value of EUR 52 (PLN 228). A significant increase was also observed in the segment of tourism (a.o. hotels, travel agencies), where the value of transactions rose by 56%, with an average basket size of EUR 138 (PLN 597).
BLIK has become a natural, even expected, element of Polish e-commerce, which is why we are developing this segment with great commitment. In the first half of the year, we introduced the BLIK Pay Later service in two banks, offering users a convenient and flexible form of payment. We can see its popularity growing month by month, with the average transaction amount in the third quarter of this year reaching EUR 84 (PLN 366), significantly above the market average. We are planning further implementations soon and continue to work with settlement agents to expand the availability of this service and strengthen BLIK's position in e-commerce
– Monika Król emphasizes.
More and more transactions at POS
Between July and September this year, one in four BLIK transactions was carried out at a payment terminal. During this period, users completed 164.1 million transactions, a 61% increase compared to the same period last year. The value of these transactions rose by 66% to EUR 2 billion (PLN 8.8 bn). The highest number of BLIK payments at POS terminals was recorded in Warsaw (Mazowieckie Voivodeship). Users also frequently used this functionality in the largest cities of voivodeships such as Dolnośląskie, Małopolskie, Wielkopolskie, and Łódzkie.
This growth was significantly driven by the increasing popularity of BLIK contactless payments, which in the third quarter of this year accounted for 48% of all transactions in this channel. Between July and September, Poles made 79.3 million contactless payments. Since the service was introduced, 3.5 million users have activated it, making payments in 157 countries across six continents. The average value of a contactless payment is EUR 10 (PLN 44).
P2P payments are gaining in importance
Phone number transfers remain highly popular among BLIK users. In the third quarter of this year, they accounted for nearly 25% of all transactions. Between July and September, users completed 154 million such transfers, a 41% increase compared to the same period last year. The total value of all P2P payments reached EUR 5.6 billion (PLN 24.6 bn), with an average transaction amount of EUR 38 (PLN 164).
The third quarter of this year also saw steady growth in ATM cash deposits and withdrawals, which accounted for 2.9% of all BLIK transactions. During this period, Poles used this function 18.3 million times (a 12% year-on-year increase), including 16.1 million withdrawals and 2.2 million deposits. The average value of a single transaction was EUR 165 (PLN 714).
Over 17 million active users
In nearly 10 years on the Polish market, BLIK has attracted a significant number of loyal users who regularly use the system for transactions. By the end of September this year, there were 31.1 million mobile applications registered in the system, with approximately 17.4 million active users. These figures represent increases of 12% and 17%, respectively, compared to the results achieved a year earlier.
BLIK's European expansion
The last few months have been a period of further strengthening BLIK's position, expanding its services, and increasing availability—not only in the Polish market but also internationally. In Slovakia, the implementation of BLIK for users of the Tatra banka VIAMO app was completed, enabling fast and convenient mobile payments at local e-shops. In Romania, BLIK Romania S.A. received authorization from the National Bank, paving the way for the full implementation of the system in the Romanian market. Additionally, BLIK recently partnered with Booksy, the largest global marketplace in the beauty industry, allowing customers to make quick payments for service bookings. Since November, BLIK is also available to users of the popular platform Revolut.
BLIK is a common standard for mobile payments. The option to use BLIK in mobile banking applications is now available to virtually every customer of domestic payment institutions offering a mobile app. The company Polski Standard Płatności (PSP) is responsible for developing the system. PSP continuously enhances BLIK’s functionality to make the system as user-friendly and versatile as possible. The shareholders of PSP are Alior Bank, Millennium Bank, Santander Bank Polska, ING Bank Śląski, mBank, PKO Bank Polski, and Mastercard.
