On 15 July, 2022, The Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) approved the application submitted by Bank Millennium, Santander Bank Polska, mBank, ING Bank Śląski and Mastercard regarding the expansion of the Polish Payment Standard, operator of the BLIK mobile payment system. The Office agreed to the concentration, under which PSP will supplement its portfolio with a deferred payment service (Buy now, pay later - BNPL).
Stripe, a financial infrastructure platform for businesses and BLIK, Polish mobile payment system, successively develop their cooperation. As a result, Stripe’s customers can now offer BLIK for online payments on their websites, without any additional integration efforts. To add this solution to their mix of payment methods, they only need to activate BLIK in their Payments Settings dashboard, without any further actions required. This simplicity and convenience in implementing the solution makes it now the most popular payment method in Poland on Stripe, with a high average daily conversion rates between 93% and 95%.
In 2021, the Polish Payment Standard (PSP), operator of the BLIK mobile payment system, recorded a net profit for the second year in a row. In the reporting period, it amounted to PLN 31.7 million (EUR 6.7 million). The company's revenues increased by 60% year-on-year, reaching PLN 112.8 million (EUR 24.1 million). The operating result, in turn, increased by over 40% to PLN 38.8 million (EUR 8.3 million). In 2021, the BLIK operator conducted advanced activities aimed at both new and existing users. At the end of December, a record 21.6 million active mobile applications were able to use BLIK, which is an increase of 28% compared to 2020.
From January to March 2022, BLIK users made nearly 250 million transactions totalling PLN 32.6 billion. At the end of Q1, BLIK was actively used by as many as 10.5m people. In the analysed period, there was a strong year-on-year increase in the number of BLIK phone transfers and POS terminal payments – by 136% and 172%, respectively. BLIK contactless payments also gained momentum at the beginning of the year. Since the service became available, it has been activated by over 800,000 users. In Q1 2022 alone, as many as 8.6 million payments were made this way.
Ukrainian citizens who have crossed the Polish border on or after 24 February 2022 can apply for financial support from the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR). In Poland, they will receive the money quickly and safely using BLIK cheques.
In the last quarter of 2021, BLIK users completed 240 million transactions, and over 763 million throughout the year. At the end of the year, 10 million people were actively using the mobile payment system. The total value of transactions in the fourth quarter was PLN 32.6 billion, while the year closed with PLN 103.3 billion. BLIK is available to all mobile banking customers with 21.6 million active applications. The first 6 banks offered their clients BLIK contactless payments, and nearly 430,000 people activated this function and completed 2.8 million transactions by the end of the year.
Between July and August 2021 (mainly during holidays) account-based mobile payment system BLIK users completed nearly 200 million transactions that were almost PLN 27 billion worth. At the end of Q3 2021, BLIK was actively used by 8.6 million individuals. The most dynamic growth was observed in the volume of BLIK smartphone transfers as well as transactions at payment terminals.
